If you’ve been searching for a collar that survives your life: river crossings, muddy trails, manure-filled pastures, early morning hunts, and everything in between, you’ve probably landed on BioThane. But what actually is it? Why does it cost more than a nylon collar? And is it really worth the hype?
BioThane is a brand name, not a generic material. It’s made by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp., a U.S.-based company out of Ohio that’s been producing coated webbing since the 1970s, originally for the equestrian industry.
The material is a strong polyester webbing core with a protective polymer coating (PVC or TPU). That outer coating is what makes BioThane waterproof, odor-resistant, and easy to wipe clean. The inner webbing is what gives it structural strength.
Think of it like a garden hose: the rubber outside protects everything, but the reinforcement inside is what keeps it from collapsing under pressure.
THIS IS THE PART MOST GUIDES SKIP. IT MATTERS.
There’s a growing market of cheap, unbranded PVC- or TPU-coated webbing that looks like BioThane but isn’t. It’s often imported, inconsistently manufactured, and can feel sticky, stiffen in cold weather, or degrade faster with use.
Genuine BioThane is ISO 9001:2015 registered. Every batch is tested for consistency. It’s non-toxic and tested safe for skin contact … something you can’t count on with unbranded alternatives.
At Pimped Out Pup, we use genuine Beta BioThane. You’ll notice the difference in feel the moment it arrives.
If your dog is living an active life, you’ve probably experienced the slow death of a nylon or fabric collar: the smell that won’t wash out, the fraying edges, the stiff muddy mess after a hard hike. Leather looks great but requires conditioning, cracks when repeatedly soaked, and gets funky fast.
BioThane solves these problems because of one core property: it’s non-porous. Water, mud, bacteria, and odors can’t penetrate the coating.
A quick rince with water and mild soap is all it takes. No soaking no intense scrubbin, No three-day dry time.
BioThane doesn’t hold onto odors because there’s nowhere for bacteria to live. Gone for good.
Unlike materials that stiffen in freezing temps, BioThane stays pliable year-round.
25+ colors designed to resist fadingin sunlight. Your gear stays colorful through season of real use.
No animal products. Tested safe for skin contact. A clean choice for dogs.
Every piece of Pimped Out Pup gear is designed with one thing in mind: the dog and human who are actually out there doing it.
Here’s something you won’t find in most BioThane guides: the material itself is not indestructible.
BioThane Corp. has noted that over time, through a combination of UV exposure, abrasion, temperature extremes, and contact with oils and water, the PVC additives that keep the material flexible can gradually work out of the coating. This can lead to reduced pliability or, in rare cases, cracking. It’s a long-term consideration, not a near-term concern for most dogs, but worth knowing.
Our products are not shock-tested or pull-tested to specific load ratings, so they should be matched to your dog’s size and activity level.Â
A well-made collar, cared for properly, will outlast cheap alternatives by a wide margin. Replace anything that shows visible signs of wear.
Maintaining BioThane is genuinely simple. No conditioning, no special products, no drying rituals.

With proper care, a well-made BioThane collar will easily outlast nylon or leather alternatives. The material itself is highly resistant to water, abrasion, and UV over the short-to-medium term. Over many years, the TPU coating can gradually lose flexibility, but most owners report years of solid performance before seeing any change.Â
For active and outdoor dogs, yes. BioThane is fully waterproof, requires no conditioning, and won’t rack from repeated soaking. Leather looks beautiful and develops character over time, but it absorbs water and odors, needs regular maintenance, and deteriorates faster on dogs that swim or roll in the mud.
Like any material left in direct sun, BioThane can warm up. Under normal wear conditions this isn’t a concern since your dog is moving around. Where it matters more is storage: leaving gear coiled tightly in a hot car or in direct sunlight over long periods can affect hte material’s flexibility over time.
Genuine BioThane itself costs more than nylon webbing. When gear is also handmade to order and custom color combos (rather than mass-produced in standards), the labor and material costs are higher. The trade-off is a piece of gear that you love and that performs across years of real use.
Handmade in Utah, built for the life your dog actually lives.
